Notocactus in Aquaculture Page 3: Notocactus vanvletii

These are quite definitely Notocactus plants, probably Notocactus vanvletii. For more information on its identification, see the explanation on Notocactus Specimens Page 2. This is a December 2000 picture.
July 1999 January 2000

This is one of the specimens, and the two pictures were taken in July 1999 and January 2000, respectively. The second picture represents a growth of about six months.

July 1999 July 2000

This is the second specimen. The first picture was taken in July 1999, while the second picture was taken in July 2000. The two pictures represents one year of growth.


Year 2001 Pictures

January 2001 April 2001

In early 2001, the two specimens were put side-by-side in one of my many aquaculture containers. With some care, one can get nice, clean specimens. The red spines look very impressive, and the two plants stand out in the collection.

August 2001 December 2001

Notocactus vanvletii show slow, but steady, growth. One cannot see a big change from the set of pictures. One year's growth isn't much for this species. In contrast, you might have noticed that the other species of Notocactus grow much faster in aquaculture than this one. In general, you can expect the larger species of Notocactus to grow faster than the smaller ones.
