Portulaca grandiflora

Portulaca grandiflora hybrids are quite often found in gardens or landscapes in Malaysia. The common varieties in Malaysia are many-petaled (doubled) hybrids which comes in at least four different colours: white, red, pink and a white-pink combination. I think the red comes in two shades, though I am not certain of it. It is also called 'Japanese rose', probably due to its dainty appearance.

This plant blooms all year round in Malaysia. If properly cared for, a bed of Portulaca grandiflora can produce a really spectacular display. Seed pods readily set, so it appears to be self-fertile. A bed of Portulaca grandiflora can produce a stunning display if it is well-maintained.

I've tried to grow this from seed but have so far failed because the tiny seeds produce fragile seedlings, and I've done a bad job so far in trying to keep the seedlings alive.

I've seen orange and yellow varieties only in photographs. All plants that I've seen so far have only the usual flower colours.

The following are pictures taken by my Fuji camera, which reproduces colours better than the first generation Casio camera.

There are a lot of pictures on these pages, so they may take some time to load.
