Astrophytum

I'm a big fan of Astrophytums. I've seen them in books, but this genus didn't leave an impression on me until I tried growing Astrophytum ornatum from seed. Astrophytums are a bit difficult to come by in Malaysia unless you go to Cameron Highlands. If there is new stock, the plants are usually snapped up quickly.

It's also extremely difficult to find an Astropytum asterias for sale in Malaysia; many nursery people keep these plants for display only as they are hard to come by.

May 1999: Astrophytum ornatum May 1999: Astrophytum ornatum

The smaller one in the two pictures is an Astrophytum ornatum grown from seed. The seeds were from SuccSeed. The other one is a young plant I bought.

Sep 1999: Astrophytum ornatum Sep 1999: Astrophytum ornatum

The two pictures above shows an offset sprouting from the top of a messed-up Astrophytum ornatum. I use this plant to produce cuttings for propagation.

Sep 1999: Astrophytum myriostigma May 1999: Astrophytum ornatum

The picture at left shows a Astrophytum myriostigma. The one at right is a Astrophytum ornatum. Both are originally from 2" pots. I bought them for aquaculture, but unfortunately I messed up the attempt. I don't think they survived. Rest in peace...
